Crochet Coastal Shores Sweater - free crochet pattern

I'm so excited to share the Coastal Shores Sweater with you!

I previously guest blogged with this design on the Hook Nook Life and I can now share this pattern here! 🙂 The Hook Nook Life is a wonderful craft blog with lots of free crochet patterns and I highly recommend checking it out!

The Coastal Shores Sweater is designed as a light, summer layering piece. Wear it on breezy summer days, out boating or when you’re at the beach! This pullover is created by seaming 4 panels together to create a loose boat neck, long-sleeve crochet sweater. Made from 100% cotton yarn, this thin and light weight pullover is super versatile and it works as a wonderful cover up over a swimsuit!

    Design Inspiration

I love how crochet stitches are always ‘closed’ so creating airy, mesh fabric is nice and easy without the need for advanced techniques! I wanted to create a summer sweater that was very breezy and open that could easily be thrown over a tank top or swimsuit!

The Coastal Shores Sweater uses a range of simple stitches and chains to create a beautiful mesh garment that’s perfect of warmer weather!

    Yarn

For this project I used DMC Natura Just Cotton and it comes in 58 shades! I love how there are so many colours and the palette ranges towards colourful mid tones and pastels.

This 100% cotton yarn has a gorgeous matte finish and is absolutely wonderful quality! The cotton is so smooth, cool and doesn’t split which is really rare for a matte cotton!

    ASSEMBLY

Lay the 2 body panels on a flat surface with the right side facing up. Sew 15cm/6” from each side towards the middle (You can sew more/less depending on how large you want your neck hole to be).

Fold you sleeves in half and line the crease up with the middle of the body panels. Sew the sleeves on to the body panel.

Fold the sweater in half and sew down the side of the sleeves and body portion of the sweater.

Weave in all of your ends.

Hi!! I have a question: the body panels are built length-wise or width-wise? Love the pattern!!

        Hi Jimena,
The body panels are worked widthways, so the foundation chain runs the width of the sweater 🙂

I’m enjoying making a size S coastal shores sweater for my daughter but I think it might be too big. Is it you wearing this sweater? What size is the girl in the photo and what size sweater is she wearing?
      Thank you.

Hi Sarah, yes I'm wearing the sweater - I'm 160cm (about 5'3") with a 32" bust and I'm wearing a size XS. This pattern fits loosely in the body 🙂

Hi!! Thank you for all these lovely patterns. This will be my third on a roll! I have a question about this one, though. In the assembly step, which side is the right side? How do I know it? Thanks!

        Hi Júlia,

The right side will be facing you when you're crocheting odd numbered rows and the wrong side is facing you when you crochet even numbered rows. for this particular pattern it isn't super important, just pick the side you prefer and be consistent - it helps to place a stitch marker or safety pin on the 'right' side so it's easy to spot.

        I hope this helps,
        Grace

Hello Grace. Please can I ask for your advice on The Coastal Shores Sweater? I am just looking at the sizes. Are the measurements given those of the final garment measurements or the individuals bust size? Excited to get started, just want to make sure I'm starting with the correct size. Lovely pattern by the way. Jan

        Hi Jan,

The measurements are the final garment measurements 🙂 'Bust' normally refers to the bust of the garment and if a pattern has a 'to fit bust' measurement that refers to the individual's bust size.

Love this pattern but I’m having a blank with how to sew the sleeves? Do I line it up to the top of the sweater?

Do you have any suggestions for how to work the arms backwards? I'm making this sweater with an ombre yarn and I'd love for the top of the sweater to color match the top of the sleeves
