Crochet Scallop Top - free crochet pattern + video

The Forget-Me-Not Top is an elegant, easy crochet top pattern! Made with cotton aran yarn, this modern crochet top will keep you cool all summer long!

simple crochet summer top with scallop stitch edging

This free crochet pattern is also accompanied by a video tutorial!

This post may contain affiliate links, view our disclosure policy for details.

The Forget-Me-Not Top has boxy fit complemented by a wide boat neck and cute scallop edging. This design is created from the neck down so you can easily customise the length to fit your style!

The top is worked up in easy double crochets and the shells are created by placing 5 double crochets in the same stitch which makes such an easy yet detailed edging! The shape of this top is so versatile that you could also easily leave off the scallop edging for a chic and simple summer crochet top.

    Design Inspiration

I loved the idea of creating a summer top with a shell border because to me summer = beach = shells! However, once I finished I noticed that the edging looked like the petals of blue Forget-Me-Not flowers, so the name Forget-Me-Not Top was born! I love how the scalloped edging adds a nice feminine detail to the simple t-shirt style.

I really wanted to create a neck down top since this construction makes it so easy to alter length and even though its summer in the Northern hemisphere you could easily extend the sleeves to create a long-sleeved top! The boat neck also sings ‘summer’ to me and the clean, modern silhouette is super flattering on all body types 🙂

    Yarn

For this design, I used Rico Creative Cotton Aran in the colour Light Blue (32). It’s a standard, 100% cotton and the shade range is amazing! The only thing is that I felt like the skeins I used had quite a few knots. 3 out of the 4 skeins I used had knots and 1 skein even had 3 knots! It seemed like a bit too much for a 50g ball … Maybe I was just unlucky?

For a comparable yarn, I’d recommend Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran, it’s a similar price point and I find it soft and easy to use. Since it’s a bit softer than the Rico Creative Cotton it glides more easily over the crochet hook, therefore it doesn’t split as much.

Hi! This is such a great pattern but I wonder if adjusting the sleeve size would affect anything? I'm a size medium im every part but I need more than 44 chains for the sleeve to fit my arm. Can I just add more chains to that? Many thanks, much love from the Philippines!

      Kia ora Grace!

I made this crochet scallop top yesterday in a size M for a loose fit. It turned out beautiful. One thing that concerns me is the neck. The neck turned out to be bigger than I expected. Is there a way to add a few rows to the already made neck to make it smaller?

      Thank you in advance!

Hi Elisa, glad you liked the pattern 🙂 Yes this pattern is kind of in between a boat neck and a crew neck but if you'd like to add a smaller neckline for size M you could attach your yarn to the top of the neckline and then repeat *DC 9, DC2tog; around to make the neckline smaller. For the 2nd round *DC 8, DC2tog; around etc. I hope this helps! Grace 🙂

        Hi Macy,
I'd recommend starting with learning basic stitches (you can find great tutorials on Youtube - you want to learn how to create a slip, chain, single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet) and starting off with a beginner project - the 1 hour crochet beanie, simple crochet coasters or Skylar Tank Top are all great options! Once you're comfortable with the stitches you can try a project like this scallop top 🙂

Personally I love Clover crochet hooks (you can find them on Amazon) but the size of your hook depends on the type of yarn you're using.
I recommend starting with at least an aran/worsted yarn and a 5mm crochet hook (anything smaller and it might be difficult for you to clearly see your stitches).

I hope this helps, Grace 🙂

I can't buy either of the yarns you recommend for this project. Which of the following do you think would suit this project. Caron one pound, Caron simply soft, Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton, or any other yarns?

        Hi Lily,
I haven't used those yarns unfortunately but as long as you're using a DK / Light (3) yarn and meet the gauge you should be fine 🙂

Hello! I am using your Forget-Me-Not Top pattern to make my first crochet top! I am at Round 7 of a size medium (176 stitches around) and I realized something--if the rounds at this point are increasing by 8 stitches each round (because there is an extra stitch in each of the 8 marked stitches) then shouldn't the count at Round 13 (which is the last round before the yoke increase for size medium) be 224 instead of 208? If that's not the case please explain what I am doing wrong!

        Hi Jessica,
At the end of Round 7 for size medium you should have 160 stitches - it sounds like maybe you started with extra foundation chains? Or maybe you've been adding an extra stitch at the end of each round? For Medium if you start with 104 chains and we increase by 8 sts 13 rounds, 8x13 = 104, so 104 + 104 = 208.
        I hope this helps,
        Grace

Thanks for responding. I think I realized what I did--I was counting Round 3 as Round 1 of the Round 3 pattern, while I should've just continued counting Round 3, Round 4, Round 5, etc. even though the directions changed, right? Looking back it seems like a silly mistake but I don't have much experience reading patterns--I only started doing so this year!

This is a very cute top! I would like to make it using Bernat Softee Baby 100% Acrylic. 5 oz/140 g. 3-Light. In white. 16 sc and 19 rows with a 4mm hook.
If so, is it possible to match the gauge to 13 stitches wide x 9 rows tall in double crochet?

As stated in the pattern you repeat from the point of the * 2 more times. So follow the stitch instructions that come after the *. If you're new to reading patterns I'd recommend searching 'read crochet pattern' on youtube and there are a lot of in depth tutorials.

        Hi,

For this pattern I didn't turn after every row so the seam isn't straight but since I used a no turning chain stitch it isn't noticeable. If you want a straight seam, I'd recommend turning after every round.

Would it be ok if I change position of the stitch markers and make the seam be in my back? I am just before the body making

The yoke increase means that it is just getting longer. It is so that you can get the yoke of the shirt long enough to meet under the arms and cover more of the bust. You read the pattern right, I had the same trouble.

      Dear Grace,
I just started to make this tee in size XL and I have a question. In round 1 I make the following DC: 1+12;13;17;13;13;13;17;13=112 and I have 120 chains. What should I do with the remaining 8 stitches? Just crochet DC and slipstitch? But it doesn't make any sense, because it won't be symmetrical.
      Can you please help me?
      Thank you,
      Sophie

Helloo I just finished round 1 for this pattern for the large size and I can’t seem to get the right amount of stitches D: I added up all the stitches and they keep adding up to 119 instead of 120. I know I could just add an extra stitch to the end, but I don’t want to mess up the rest of the rounds since this is the first round. Is anyone else having this problem?
